Home Description

The project ALP FFIRS aims to improve forest fire prevention under a changing climate in the Alpine Space, by creating a shared warning system based on weather conditions. The fire regime at any given location is the result of complex interactions between fuels, social issues, topography, ignitions and weather conditions. The analysis of fires frequency and distribution will allow to model forest fire danger in the alpine region. The definition of a univocal Alpine Forest Fire Danger Scale will support the interpretation of danger thresholds as enhancement of emergency plans and operational procedures. Due to the debate on climate change, forest fires as potential disturbance have become an issue in the Alpine region over the last decade. An Alpine network on forest fire impact mitigation will be assembled reflecting common policies in risk prevention management, by fostering mutual aid in prevention, prepardeness and suppression procedures.
ALPFFIRS will combine the scientific approach and wide partner expertise to produce shared protocols and procedures for forest fire prevention and counteraction.

Into details:

Work Package “Warning system implementation” concentrates on identification of best techniques to implement the shared alerting system in the whole Alpine Space, facing operational issues and performing in-depth tests on the pilot areas
Work Package “Climate Change Impact”, starting from the Alpine Space forest fire statistical analysis and weather climate scenarios downscaling to alpine environment, will evaluate quantitatively the forest fire danger evolution, outlining reccommendations and adaptation options.
Work Package “Information and Publicity” aims to rise awareness of local stakeholders and population through a widespread outputs dissemination.
Work Package “Procedures and training” will synthesize and integrate the know-how generated in ALP FFIRS into immediate practice for technical operators and authorities. Recommendations will be given to policy makers and local stakeholders.
